McDonalds slashes prices as it pilots dine-in scheme

Following the Chancellor’s VAT reduction last week, McDonald’s has announced a raft of price reductions across its menu, to be recommended to all franchisees. The reductions will be found across meal bundles and menu ‘classics’, and while prices may vary slightly by locations, the recommendation includes an estate-wide 40p reduction on Extra Value Meals menu and 30p for every Happy Meal. The fast food giant will also introduce a 50p reduction on breakfast meals following the reintroduction of its breakfast menu, while its McCafe coffee range will also see prices slashed. The price cuts came into effect from 5am today (15 July) for meals purchased through its Drive Thrus, or in its restaurants for takeaway items. While the group welcomed the Chancellor’s ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme, which offers a 50% discount off dine-in bills up to £10, it noted that the group is yet to open for dine-in. In its latest update, it confirmed it is working to reopen its dine-in restaurants “when we are confident we can adhere to the government guidance, which enables our teams to work and customers to visit safely”. Following the latest government announcement, it has now reopened four restaurants across the UK and Ireland to test dine-in, and will extend this pilot further this week to quickly test the procedures and safety measures it will introduce to enable dine-in. The dine-in pilot has seen it reopen with table service only, reducing capacity by as much as 70% in some restaurants to enable social distancing. Customers can order at a kiosk, at the till or at your table using the My McDonald’s App, with food delivered to tables by employees. Hand-sanitising stations, floor markings and Perspex screens will be implemented across all restaurant sites, while touchpoints and seating areas will be cleaned more frequently. It is also testing t how to reopen the outside seating areas in restaurants to enable a larger capacity. Paul Pomroy, McDonald’s CEO UK and Ireland, said: “It has been an unprecedented four months.. You may not know that in the UK, the vast majority of our 1,350 restaurants are owned and operated by individual business men and women. “Together with those franchisees and the 80,000 employees who have returned to work already, we have worked hard to return to serving your favourites in towns and cities across the country over the last four weeks.” He added: “We welcome the timely package of measures from the UK government to protect the hospitality sector. “They enable us, along with our franchisees, to protect our people, absorb the increased costs of operating safely in the post-Covid world and to provide even greater value to our customers with reduced pricing on certain menu items.”
