Today’s news in brief – 08/01/24

Drinks sales in the UK saw 7% year-on-year growth in the two weeks ended 30 December 2023, according to data from CGA. Other notably strong days included ‘Mad Friday’ (22 December), when sales were up by 21%. It was a more difficult festive season in the spirits category where sales were 3% ahead in the penultimate week of 2023, but 11% down in the final week.

RMT has suspended its planned tube strike, following positive talks with TfL. Planned action was scheduled from today (8 January) to Thursday (11 January). The cancellation comes after UKH feared that the planned disruption would cost the hospitality sector up to £50m during the “key” week days that commuters return to the city.

Thomas Franks has appointed Zac Toumazi as its non-executive director on the main board, effective 22 January. Toumazi brings an extensive background in facilities management to the catering company. In his new role, Toumazi will mentor the sales and leadership teams, driving growth strategies in the city, regionally, and internationally.
