Burger King announces new reusable packaging plan
Burger King has announced its new reusable packaging model that aims to help cut down the company’s packaging waste.
The new packaging starting in 2021 is said to feature a collection system in the participating restaurants. Guests will be able to return their food packaging so it can be safely cleaned through Loop, a zero-waste packaging service, and reused at Burger King restaurants.
Customers who opt for the reusable packaging will be charged a deposit at the time of purchase but can receive a refund once they return it.
Burger King said restaurants in New York City, Portland and Tokyo will be among the first cities to experience the reusable packaging with more locations expected to be added in the coming months.
Tom Szaky, CEO of Loop said: “During COVID, we have seen the environmental impact of increased takeaway ordering which makes this initiative by Burger King all the more important.
“This enables Burger King consumers to easily bring reusability into their daily lives, and whether they choose to eat-in or takeaway, they will be able to get some of their favorite food and drinks in a reusable container.”
With the pandemic and government restrictions, Burger King stated that “rigorous safety procedures around cleanliness and hygiene” measures will be placed to ensure all the products are thoroughly cleaned before use.
Matthew Banton, head of innovation and sustainability at Burger King, said: “As part of our Restaurant Brands for Good plan, we’re investing in the development of sustainable packaging solutions that will help push the food service industry forward in reducing packaging waste.”
