Calorie cap introduced for some restaurant dishes
Public Health England is set to announce calorie caps for certain restaurant dishes, the cap would see the limit for pies set at 695 calories and pizzas at 928 calories.
Under the new measures Pizza Express would breach the regulations on all but four of it classic pizzas. With the cap introduced to reduce childhood obesity and promote healthy eating.
Chief secretary to the treasury Liz Truss showed concern that the new proposals would be “burdensome” to smaller restaurants, adding that they could “result in job losses and higher food prices”.
Duncan Selbie, CEO of Public Health England, said: “Excess calories is the next big challenge for the food industry to improve the food we all consume.”
The trade body’s chief nutritionist, Alison Tedstone, added: “The simple truth is, on average we need to eat less. Children and adults routinely eat too many calories. These are early days in the calorie reduction programme, but the food industry has a responsibility to act.”
