Today’s news in brief – 03/10/24

Blank Street Coffee saw its UK turnover rise sharply by 517% to £11.4m in the year ended 31 December 2023. The New York-based coffee chain first began trading in the UK in June 2022, so these results reflect its first full year in this market. While the group sustained a net loss of £4.2m during the period, it was attributed to more openings and new products.

Sadiq Khan’s London night czar Amy Lamé will be stepping down at the end of the month after eight years in the role. The night czar was a new role created by Khan following his election as mayor in 2016 focused on the capital’s nightlife. As it currently stands it is unclear whether Lamé will be replaced, especially after there has been much criticism of the role.

The Piano Works’ founder, Alan Lorrimer, has left the business following its acquisition by Nightcap earlier this year. Lorrimer has been responsible for the creation of over 14 concepts, including The Caviar Bar, Porters and Bar Sol. As part of the deal, Nightcap had decided to fully integrate The Piano Works’ head office into its existing support team.

Penmaenuchaf in Dolgellau, Gwynedd, has appointed a new head chef. Dan Andree, who is currently in the same position at Seren’s Oxwich restaurant, Beach House, will replace Thomas Hine ahead of his return to chef contracting. Throughout his role at Beach House, Andree has acted as chef director Hywel Griffith’s right hand man.
