D&D London relaunches flagship restaurant
While the first-floor restaurant will introduce a sophisticated, seasonal menu, the ground floor Grand Café will continue to serve German and Mittel-European dishes

Restaurant group D&D London has revealed that its Kings Cross flagship, German Gymnasium, is relaunching the first-floor restaurant following the arrival of new executive chef, Alexander Thiel.
Thiel has curated the new menu at the restaurant, which has been inspired by German home cooking and drawing upon his experiences working at Sachs and Dressler.
According to the chef, his mission is to challenge preconceptions of German cuisine by “bringing a new and refined take on the country’s cooking” to the London food scene.
While the first-floor restaurant will introduce a sophisticated, seasonal menu, the ground floor Grand Café will continue to serve German and Mittel-European dishes from breakfast to dinner.
Alongside the revamp of the restaurant’s offering, the first floor Meister Bar will also be launching a brand-new cocktail menu in mid-April, inspired by Germany’s national parks and using ingredients, flavours and colours that represent their namesakes.
German Gymnasium opened in 2015 in a Grade II-listed building, which has a “theatrical” staircase linking the ground floor Grand Café to the first floor restaurant that has tables tucked behind pillars.
According to the restaurant group, the new direction will offer “a full 360 experience of German food, cocktails, and brasserie style food, offering something for everyone for any occasion”.
