Today’s news in brief – 04/12/23

The week ending 25 November saw a 5% decline in drinks sales year-on-year, compared to last year’s World Cup period. Monday and Friday showed stark drops due to England’s matches in the tournament. However, the other five days saw positive growth, with Saturday leading at a 13% increase. Beer and cider faced a 5% and 7% decline respectively, while spirits struggled with a 12% drop. CGA’s Jonathan Jones noted optimism for the festive season, buoyed by Saturday’s encouraging sales and the postponed rail strikes.

Greene King has launched an eco-initiative that aims to equip 600 managed pubs with voltage optimisation technology by the end of 2023. This tech regulates power supply that will cut energy use, costs, and the group’s carbon footprint. After successful trials, notably in larger, higher-energy pubs like Farmhouse Inns, the investment is expected to pay off. This move aligns with Greene King’s roadmap to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, signalling a commitment to environmental sustainability.
