Today’s news in brief – 08/04/24
The latest transport strike has widened hospitality revenue losses to over £5bn, according to the NTIA. News follows the recent industrial action announced by the ASLEF union and London Underground, which ran from 5 April until today (8 April) and included a six-day ban on overtime. According to Kill, the strike posed significant challenges to the night-time economy and hospitality sectors, compounding existing economic hardships.
Average drinks sales in the UK rose 1% for the week of St Patrick’s Day, as pubs and bars benefited from the holiday falling on a Sunday (17 March) this year. As a result, sales were 13% ahead of the equivalent Sunday last year. It follows a 1% increase over the previous week, and 5% growth in the seven days before that.
Loungers has made three key appointments to the group. Current Lounge MD Justin Carter has been promoted to the new role of group managing director, effective from today (8 April). Meanwhile, Kate Eastwood will join as Lounge managing director from Fullers and David Matthews as Lounge operations director (North).
Heartwood Collection has acquired The White Hart in Lymington, for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition is part of the group’s growth plans, which remains on track to grow to over 60 sites by 2027. Dating back to the 1700s, the historic pub is located on the edge of the New Forest. The Grade II-listed building will soon undergo a multi-million refurbishment which will restore some of its original features such as its part-tiled exterior and beamed interior.
