HMRC has initiated a crackdown on restaurants that use illegal software to manipulate sales records. Following an amnesty deadline, raids have begun at 24 restaurants and takeaways. This software, known as Electronic Sales Suppression (ESS), hides or reduces card sales to evade tax. Businesses not coming forward could face criminal investigations with substantial penalties. HMRC obtained a list of users from earlier investigations, signalling more inquiries ahead. 

Amber Taverns has expanded its reach by acquiring four new locations in Derby, Bridgend, Airdrie, and Motherwell. Investing £4.5m in refurbishments, these sites – formerly retail spaces – will offer affordable pints starting at £2.50. Additionally, The Railway in Caerphilly recently opened after significant refurbishment, while The Old Vic in Cleethorpes is being revamped for a February launch. With a goal of adding around 15 pubs yearly, CEO James Baer emphasises their commitment to community investment and quality pub experiences.
